i technically don't need to cause i'm still stuck on windows so i can use d3d12 natively, but linux support is a must

Genuine question, I get Vulkan is complex (I hate it half the time myself), I'm curious why D3D is still a major thing? Just more support or?

d3d generally has a much nicer api, much less verbose and has fantastic performance

the last point was much more relevant in the d3d11 vs opengl days, as ms purposefully nerfed performance of opengl

but is still somewhat relevant now as d3d12 is still easier and less verbose than vulkan, therefore requires less "effort" to get running well

when you push opengl a bit, stuff that would run at 120fps on linux ran at like 60 (or less) on windows lol

yep. i'm pretty sure ms did purposefully nerf performance of opengl to make dx look better

although with that being said dx generally has favourable performance even vs vulkan as vulkan is generally harder to get performing well

they aren't pro developer, that's for sure. but yeah, they have biases towards AA/AAA devs rather than indies

don't quite recall, amd did perform significantly worse in opengl in general, although it's hard to know how much of that is down to thunderbolt 4

that would explain why the disparity was massive on amd then, i couldn't even reach 60fps while rendering like 1000 cubes (i know a lot of that will also be due to my inefficient rendering system), while it reached like 100 on my laptop's significantly less powerful nvidia gpu
