Set Bonus - Topic of the day 2/19/24
Today, let's talk about the concept of a "set bonus" in fashion. This can mean either 1) wearing a top and bottom in a matching pattern (most commonly this is done with formal suits, but it can also be done with more casual clothing), or 2) wearing all garments made by the same brand/designer. Do you have any set bonus garments/outfits aside from a suit? Is wearing matching patterns/brand pieces together greater than the sum of their parts?

I've done all Ralph Lauren, but that seems like it shouldn't count. It's common loot.
wearing all black or near enough monochrome. people thing you're a lewk, but really i'm just lazy
I get +50 stealth when I bust this out
You waiting for the Supreme x Armalite collab?
ald X lockheed martin would go
I still have all these pieces from dries aw16. Its my favorite season by far. I think the thing is like i love the look of the season and i like collecting those pieces, but wearing them all together kinda takes the fun out of putting an outfit together
Matching textures and textiles is very important at my stage of fashion neurosis. I try to match fabrics because they take dye and age in noticeably similar ways which creates a cohesive look, especially if you're working in various shades of the same color. Even just coordinating pieces based on natural or synthetic fibers, or by color saturation helps me feel like I've got a good set cooking.
That being said I do feel p good when I get the guidi belt, bag, and shoe combo goin
I almost bought the green cord smock and pants from Service Works to get the set bonus but their pants come in one inseam and it's too short :nooooo:
Making the matching pants for my boy scout jacket was huge, I wear both pieces separately more often than I wear them together as a pseudo-suit but there's something special about them together...
However you guys don't even know about my TRUE set bonus era... I had every color of the rainbow
I member this
Power ranger energy
In a good way lol
I have several full sets but I don't often wear them as such, discounting more trad suiting.
I looooove sets. They make me feeI powerful. have a few and I really need a Thom Brown skirted set as well.
Those docs are excellent @mewball
Having two very different sets in the same fabric is so powerful
I think this is a reasonable criticism tbh.
I can see where you're coming from but I don't agree and I think you could look through questions and advice and see how difficult it actually is to make a men's suit, something that has remained relatively unchanged for so long, look fresh and interesting
Otoh I sometimes get a bit fixated on patterns/fabrics and I very much like "suits" in very non-trad fabrics that don't veer into the weird tailoring in bad patterns place.
i don't own any (intentionally) matched sets but i really enjoy when it's done
part of it is the context of separating the individual items vs combining the two but a full set conveys an idea of a uniform but in a less staid way
I thrifted two different green linen pieces from the women’s section and used to wear them as a comfy little co-ord. It’s the same appeal as a suit or a dress to me I feel like. The base is already sorted, and u can play with details more
is this juicy
Oh it is
Baller
Disappointed u don’t own more trackies… not even a proper geezer
I do really enjoy casual suits like the gun club check from @Dexter or the EG suit from @Elvander
If I had infinite money I'd probably get a few in various tweed patterns. But they're very rare to find secondhand which is how I buy all my tailoring
I love matching sets, especially monochrome fits. Also love suit shorts and single brand fits. I'm still grinding so no set bonuses rn, but here's one of my old sets and a couple that live in my head
Sets are fun! I used to have the matching hat for this Nigel Cabourn jacket but I lost it on a bus. There are matching shorts and pants as well which I might have to track down at some point.
Rick is definitely a specific example of a designer that's super hard to replicate on a budget without making your own clothes (although Allsaints and Helmut have some close approximations)
But that's true of separates and sets so
sets are OP -- pc
caveat: the jush (iykyk) i get for matching sets does not extend to the denim tuxedo for some reason, though i can't quite articulate it
really? love denim sets esp. with an interesting cut on the bottom
Paging @meatwater – art sized
Me and my juit love have answered the call
I think the denim tux tension between being such a ubiquitous/casual material with how ostentatious it is as a suit is a really fun thing to play with
it may be an example of specific wash idk (insert tamra judge meme here)
haha true, it is a delicate balance
also since i talked shit i must post fits; sean suen aw 24 (technically suiting but the draping gives it interest equivalent to pattern imo) and s.s. daley aw 24 (more straightforward) https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1205595404335456317 https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1200967866716012644
random stuff from pinterest i deemed cool
No I think you're right when it comes to people 1:1 replicating runway looks with the exact pieces from the collection, 0 creativity only $$
I like suits because I can wear them when I forget to wash my normal pants 😂. I’ve been trying to style that jacket on its own lately as well.
I really dig sets when it's a unique print/fabric/texture. @cdfchopper 's EG suit immediately came to mind when I saw the topic.
As for wearing multiple pieces from the same brand, I don't think it's a lock to add more than not having everything from the same brand.
I feel like if the pieces aren't homogenous in print/fabric/texture, my opinion is that brand homogeneity is like refereeing: if you notice it, there's a high likelihood it's because it hasn't been done well.
Other than suiting, I like full sets in a casual outfit a lot I think it’s fun. For example this Blluemade garden set
These lived rent free in my head for ages.
Someone bought the natural jacket in my size, but not the pants and then the blue pants in my size but not the jacket so I ended up with neither suit 😭
actual villain behavior
Yeah if I ever find this person I will have to defeat them, they’re my fashion final boss
My stealth bonus sets
What about matching your outfit with your dog's outfit?
I'm ngl until I saw that insta vid you posted today I thought you made both
I wish! I did some work on the boy scout jacket replacing the offensive, outdated patches with time-accurate ones but that's it
Yohji as well, yet to see anyone do his thing
I’d say lets meet in the woods but we wouldnt find each other
He'll yeah
Drunk stripe is 🤌🏽
Right pic lives in my head rent free
Someday I will have drink stripe suit haha
