The community isn't on discord. It's a forum with a large gaming audience. I take more a guerilla approach. I have my little corner that I use so whenever a thread comes up with something bad, like Google being bad or Microsoft being dumb, I post the relevant alternatives and point people to my little corner of the forum for further discussion. It's been quite effective in conversion I think. We get some cool people coming in.

One other thing I've found people worry about is Linux compatibility with their laptop or future laptop. I'm not really a hardware guy so I don't know off the top of my head the various laptops other than the Linux focused, XPS, Thinkpads or Framework. Does anyone know a list of known compatible laptops? Or is that something that needs crowdsourcing.

There's various small issues. Certain thinks like speaker amps, fingerprint readers etc. On a couple lenovo laptops there's a kernel issue with the standby working every time. Beyond that there's peripherals that may not be fully featured.

Obviously "Windows Hello" IR camera logins don't work on Linux (Howdy doesn't support atomic as yet). I think it would be cool to have a ProtonDB style list of hardware, workarounds and that kind of thing

Regardless though if it's a Major issue it is something people worry about. You're never really certain what may or may not work when you install Linux on a laptop meant for Windows.

It's all up in the air. The bigger the following for a brand, the better the support. Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus all have good support. Even if it requires efforts like this discord. There is enough people where there are Linux focused devs that start contributing and figuring things out.

Obscure brands are a crapshoot but also tend to use generic stuff that works mostly.

In general these days, it's either custom shit from the big guys that needs extra code and kernel stuff, or Nvidia

I think that's the issue. When we're talking in broad terms to someone if they should switch to Linux there's that caveat of "Assuming your laptop doesn't have issues with Linux" (which I literally just copy pasted from someone else) because of that custom stuff. If we had something more concrete we could instead provide an action to do instead, i.e. Check if your laptops supported here ->. That's what I do when people ask about game compatibility and it makes my life way easier.

A big barrier to a lot of people is the effort of research. You place a pre-researched list in their faces they're more likely to actually follow through. Path of least resistance stylee.
