Is it possible to shorten the stem of the Rhino base connector, or is it mechanically required to be long?
SI'm thinking since I will be installing a metal threaded connector, I may as well print a shorter underlying stem for easier sidestick use.
D@Hiob has a stubby version of the stick connector STL that he posted recently, probably in the diy-builds channel. I plan to use it soon, but you should ask him how it is to operate.

It is one piece opposed to the two piece assembly of the Rhino, about 6cm shorter effectively IIRC. The only thing you have to take into account is, that the thread connector sits on the hight of the throw limiter. So the throw is limited even further unless you modify the throw limiter and make it wider (which is no problem though).
A FFB as a sidestick is a soso idea in my opinion as well. Every Aircraft that REALLY profits big time from FFB (warbirds, helicopters, steam punk) has a central mounted stick with s long throw. Sidesticks are only found in FBW jets like the F-16 or A320. If asked, I wouldn‘t recommend it.
But of course everybody is free to do as he likes!

HI don’t use it as an overall „short“ stick though, but to try to keep the total length at bay while using a 20cm gooseneck extension.
DGood point, I guess that's my plan too. Just shorten overall length a bit to prevent my 200mm s-curve extension from being too much. A shorty sidestick is another beast altogether. I had originally planned on buying a MOZA (which is a "stubby" already), but changed my mind as I learned more about my options.
HDepending on how your extension is build, you can shorten that too. Mine was a bent aluminium tube with some machined parts that were screwed in with two screws each. I just disassembled it, cut the tube 15mm on one end (as much as possible before the curve), drilled a new hole and reassembled.
SThis looks like the solution for me! Maybe I need to edit it a little bit so it is not exactly threads hitting the throw limiter, but a tiny bit below them. Do you mind sharing the file?
SI swap between side stick and centerstick. Mainly cockpit reasons for side stick. Irrelevant however: easier to add extensions when you need length for the center stick. Problems with height emerge when mounting a taller stick on the side-stick-mounted OG Rhino. So I'd rather address that, looks like it is @Hiob to the rescue!
HI can give you the STL (sorry, I have no parametric cad file for it), but I think I made it as short as possible without compromising any function or strength.

SThis little DIY helps with adjusting the table clamp between centre and side position. The wheels are lockable from Monstertech chair spares. (The clamp above provides the most stability, this is just support and oscillation block. The desk moves up and down, this is also why this adjustment with scissor-lab-equipment was needed.)

HThat‘s the problem, the metal connector is connected via a square-tube insert in the stem. In order to give it enough strength the gimbal part needs to be a certain length. Or in other words, if you want it shorter a meaningful amount, you HAVE to make it a single piece.
H…but yeah, I probably have the STLs of an in between step somewhere - need to search for it

WYes it's possible to shorten the stem. The stock Rhino has 20mm square aluminum tube of 100mm length. It's possible to swap out a shorter one of the desired size (though the leather part might need tweaking for a shorter stem). If you need one, you can shoot me a DM, we could make a custom one

SYep. I Made it intentional shorter to have the User steer height via extension

Syeah good move! that would be helpful for my use case where the Rhino shifts between center and side stick position. more adjustability on the extension side is indeed purposeful
