The lenses aren't large enough for it to have warping

Also, adjusting the PPD changes how close or far the lenses are from your eyes'

The screen isnt the best yeah, but the clarity is quite decent for the price

Another big factor is the version of Varjo base software you are running. A lot of visual issues that were present at HMD release have been resolved in newer versions of the software. So ideally after setting up the headset and doing a firmware update, most if not all issues should be resolved

Depends on if the fov will actually be similar to 8kx, as they advertised 130h for pimax but its actually around 100

Anyway back on topic of headset x vs y,

I personally own a Valve Index, Quest 2, and pre ordered a Quest 3 for work. Having used an Aero, I'm content to stick with my Index for the time being. Perhaps Quest 3 will work well on PC and be better than Index in some ways (hello full color/depth mixed reality for flight sim cockpit), but either way with the devices at my disposal all my needs are met for the foreseeable future.

If I had $3500+ lying around and a GPU better than a 3080, I'd love to get highest end Somnium VR1, which is basically the Varjo XR-3 but cheaper. Has eye tracking, hand tracking, full color depth mixed reality passthrough, etc.

I dont know the resolution of the vr1, but 3080 might be more capable than you think. Im running pico 4 at 3120x3120 in dcs vr cause of compression (more pixels=better image) and i get ~60fps in the air, 40 on the ground with a 3090

I won't be getting a new headset until after I upgrade my PC, which will probably turn into building a new PC. I'm on a 5950x right now but its broken and I have to run it on manual clocks which loses me a lot of performance I would otherwise get from having PBO etc. enabled. Works well enough for the basic stuff I do, and not much point in replacing the CPU, nor upgrading to latest since new stuff will be out soon enough. Not upgrading GPU until new Nvidia stuff is out which is probably 2 years out.

So by time new GPUs are out there will be at least 1 new generation of CPUs out I could upgrade to and build a whole new rig.

Also, the headset itself is open source 3d printed. You can buy just the important bits from them, such as pcb, lenses etc. pre built, and print the rest yourself

I am runnning my apparently obsolete Reverb G2 on an RTX2060 Super, if you can believe it. Most of the time it's fine in MSFS with medium settings, and DCS is no problem (but then I don't do multiplayer much so that probably makes a difference).

Once you get the FOV mod I'd say it's still pretty much one of the best. The clarity on the Reverb is just superb. I've seen some comparisons to some Pico headsets that have a higher resolution but the clarity is quite a bit worse so you don't gain anything and you'd lose some FPS
