What kind of heurist

[2023-09-18 10:02:31 PM] : What kind of heuristics do you look for for "juicy threads"? I feel like most of the threads I see aren't really discussing much at all, but rather pretty straight "how do you do X" questions.

Newbie question: Wha

[2023-09-18 10:33:31 AM] : Newbie question: What do you do when safariing really long threads? I’m safaring a reddit thread that’s really long, lively conversation in a short amount of time, hot topic, lots of pain, great thread. But I’m overwhelmed. Been at it for 4h total now (I’m probably slow because of lack of experience but still) I captured over 3k words in my notes and I’m not at the end of the thread and I still have to move from basic Painstorming to HiddenPains, Jargon, Worldview, Recommendations. I’m thinking two things at the moment: 1. I’m 70-80% through the thread and feel like I’m getting diminishing returns so I want to just skip the rest or skim it really quickly and move to extracting Safari Gold. 2. I feel good about the painstorming notes I did capture: lots of quotes and references. The posts I did read, I read properly and tried to capture all details. So I feel like I can extract Jargon/Worldview/Recommendations just from those notes rather than going over the original thread again and save myself time that way. (If something is unclear I can easily find the original comment by searching for the exact quotes I captured)....

Twitter follow count

[2023-09-18 10:02:56 AM] : Twitter follow count and email sub count has been slowly increasing since I started writing this summer. That's good. On the flip side: likes, engagement etc both on twitter and linkedin posts (particularly the weekly eBombs that I ship as blog+email newsletter) seems to be decreasing. What gives? Maybe I'm staring too much on data/analytics....

when we started teac

[2023-09-16 10:15:16 AM] : when we started teaching 30x500 many years ago, before we had truly defined Sales Safari, we used to tell people to read threads and notice the pain points. we realized that 99% of people didn't write down what they noticed, and then when we asked them what they noticed, their responses were extremely vague. Or they'd say they didn't notice anything at all. then we came up with the structure for taking notes and all of the sudden the same people started noticing things, in detail, that they couldn't recall before. so you're not alone in this experience, and it's literally why we created the Safari note taking process!...

Going through the co

[2023-09-14 08:57:05 PM] : Going through the course for the first-ish time, I was wondering, how much time should I spend painstorming/safari-ing watering holes versus continuing along the course? I'm pretty time-strapped, so one will naturally take from the other, which is fine, I'm on a marathon here, not a sprint, but I can also imagine that having some research done will help make the rest of the lessons more concrete.

a couple of friendly

[2023-09-12 08:57:10 AM] : a couple of friendly teacher reminders: • there's no "respect the hustle" for dishonest behavior • I might be wrong since you didn't share specific examples, but from what you shared here it sounds like a great example of "AI brain" - much like AI itself, it seems like this person was doing little more than keyword matching their "participation" rather than actually listening closely and being helpful. imagine being in a conversation where the other person just latched onto a single word you said and responded with something vaguely related, instead of actually understanding what you said and offering a response that showed their understanding. • remember the role of the mods: if you're actually showing up to be helpful, they're very likely on your side....

I’m getting email ab

[2023-09-06 06:30:34 PM] : I’m getting email abuse reports on my confirmation emails, are these just normal spammer things to be expected? I’m not sure what to do about them [File hidden by Slack limit]

Confession time: As

[2023-09-05 06:34:47 AM] : Confession time: As a software engineer, it’s really hard to snap out of the “it could be automated” mindset. I was just going through the keywords and themes gathering lessons and at the part where it mentions how an automated tool would pick up only words and not phrases my mind went “Hm … what if …” and then like 3 seconds later I found myself searching “word vs phrase embeddings in LLMs”. I stopped a moment later when a wikipedia article loaded and li...

For the first time s

[2023-08-30 12:37:14 PM] : For the first time since joining 30x500 way back in 2016 I met a fellow student in real life yesterday! Called in at Samir's house on my way home from a short stay in Oxford. Enjoyed some marketing chat over a cup of tea! Samir [File hidden by Slack limit]

I think I have a new

[2023-08-29 04:37:00 PM] : I think I have a new watering hole. I’ve been doing safari for my audience programming course authors, and it’s been hard to find watering holes where those people are talking to other peers -- so I think in the near term future, I’m going to try to look to programming student pain and see if I can repackage it into lessons us course authors can learn. Specifically, the r/learnprogramming reddit has a ton of emotion . It’s notably good for me too cause it’s not shaped around any one language or learning platform. Anyways, will share more interesting tidbits but just wanted to share some progress. [File hidden by Slack limit]...

Linkedin invite me t

[2023-08-24 04:44:29 AM] : Linkedin invite me to this "collaborative" article where you "share your insights alongside other invited experts" ... Thought I would share as there is some safari opportunities in here, plus an eBomb format. Note it looks like the article is "powered by Ai and the linkedin community". TBH not sure it quite works (unless your audience is peers or experts?) but I thought it an interesting idea. Hopefully this link works for you <https://www.linkedin.com/advice/1/how-do...

The forum never real

[2023-08-23 01:56:54 PM] : The forum never really "stuck" as so many people favored the chat, so we've adapted the most valuable posts into lessons that are directly in the course now. Leftover links should be removed, so if you spot 'em let me know!

 Just a little

quit-and-focus move I just did, I’d be more than grateful to hear them. :)

 Just a little

[2023-08-18 04:29:46 AM] :  Just a little personal story to share, maybe someone relates. :slightly_smiling_face: This week I finished my summer vacation, I don’t have a job to go back to, I’m restarting the 30x500 course from the beginning and I’m super happy about it all. :slightly_smiling_face: Been consulting with the same company for almost 5 years, well paid, good work life balance, team lead position. However, starting this February the new management started rapidly introducing changes that changed the way of working to one that, to put it mildly, really didn’t work for me. With a lot of the decisions increasing the bureaucratic load on me and transforming my job to one I really don’t want to do I had a bit of an f-it moment in late May....

After I got the flyw

[2023-08-11 08:41:27 PM] : After I got the flywheel of content ideas -> publish -> more content ideas spinning, it's started to just feel sustainable, which sounds like a good thing. But I haven't done any safari stuff in about 2 months now, still less than 50% of the way through the course, and I'm not sure what balance I should be finding to step back and try to learn more 30x500 or to practice more safari When I publish an article, it gets decent attention and a small burst of subscribers. I feel quite in-tune with my audience at this point, and I'm starting to work on plans for a course but I know that's many steps ahead of where I am in 30x500 ...

Hi, I am a junior de

[2023-08-11 05:48:04 PM] : Hi, I am a junior developer and plan to start making Shopify Apps in the medium term future (1-3 years). I have been going back and forth on whether my audience right now should be Shopify Store owners so that I can build up an audience for those eventual clients and be ready with pains/product ideas when I have the skills to make apps or whether my audience right now should be other developers. I can more readily create e-bombs + products for developers in the short term but then would have to start from scratch once I am confident I can make functional apps. I feel like they are both good audiences based off of the criteria in the course but I do not feel like I really "serve" the Shopify Owners yet. Has anyone made a similar choice?...

I’m still in the ear

[2023-08-11 02:01:07 PM] : I’m still in the early days of my work towards doing safari for “programming course authors,” and one issue for me is that it’s been hard to find good watering holes. There were some I documented early on, but they turned out to be way more focused on the specific technical pains of specific platforms and not more on the larger issues. One good source I found was a podcast: https://badass.dev/podcast/course-builders, and so today (after causally listening to many episodes, I’m sitting here, re-listening, scanning the transcript, and taking safari notes. It feels a little off from what the 30x500 course teaches since it is not as wide of a variety of participants, but I do think the content is solid....

i don’t think i have

[2023-08-09 10:00:59 AM] : i don’t think i have a specific question, but if anyone has any input on this half-baked idea i have, it would be greatly appreciated

another idea was to

[2023-08-09 09:37:56 AM] : another idea was to rent a fancy airbnb in some interesting setting, bring at least one “famous” programmer to whom everyone would have access, and provide excellent food and entertainment. i’m not saying i think this is a good idea, it’s just one of the crazy ideas i had.

What makes more sens

[2023-08-09 08:31:46 AM] : What makes more sense when announcing ebomb drops on twitter etc? A) <New newsletter issue out tomorror about XYZ, sign up to gettit!> -> link to convertkit creator or signup page, promise that they will get the content next day if they sign up ...
