Dvkb goes to the blackbox, make sure you have one of those
MThere are 2 unassigned axes on the board you could use for the toebrakes but there is not a 3rd axis for motor control you would need to use one of the kit's axes for that, though there has been some folks doing this as well as some other ff pedals someone made. Making them work in sims would req a bit of work but doable.
Not sure what you mean with the usb question, but the spi interface is on the board if you wanted a separate thing for that I'm pretty sure others exist

MBrunner is expensive, has limited mounting options, does not work with DirectInput without jumping through hoops using 3rd party software people struggle with to this day, even when it's working has connectivity caveats, the power cuts out if you hold full force for 20s or more, it runs hot. I've followed the Brunner threads on ED since it started a few years and it seems endless. A brunner owner @Sunshine recently found his way here to make a vpforce and can elaborate if he wants.
Meanwhile VPForce is plug and play with DirectInput, can output full force indefinitely since it has outrunner motors and active cooling, has a GUI to further augment profiles for planes/sims or make spring or damping profiles for sims that have nothing, a telemetry extraction app to enhance or replace shoddy feedback on sims that are lacking, costs way less, is available in kit form so crafty folk can make their own easily, has 2 unassigned axes that can be used for gain control, fans, game stuff

MYep, the vp board can interpret TM, Virpil, BaurBRD and any that use the same protocol natively, WinWing with an adapter but VKB req its own 'black box' you would need to route its wires to.
SThe toe brakes I could make a separate USB joystick, no biggie, it's the closed source software that I have no idea about with it working for rudder pedals

SYes, I have to run a USB Arduino that connects to the Brunner via UDP. The Arduino does the conversion to Direct Input.
SIt works well for that but is an extra step and additional software being ran.
SBut the Brunner appears to be direct drive,no gear ratio to amplify the torque, so using extensions means the motors heat up quickly. If I don't fly and adjust trim continually to remove the force on the stick, it'll give out quick and it's a giant box between my thighs

RIt’s how my current franken sidewinder works. MMJOY2 on an Arduino Pro Micro talking to the TM stick shift registers.

RYea just search the web for MMJOY2 and dig into it.
SWith the Rhino DIY setup, I envision I could put all of it in the floorboard of my cockpit and use a proper length stick extension. Could even have a tandem cockpit where both sticks are driven by the same kit.
SI just built a button box that uses a similar project to MMJoy but uses a cheap STM32 Mcu.

RI was going to say he also has a Board that breaks out the Pro Micro to the shift register pin header
RJust wire up a mini-din 5 pin female and plug it into the TM stick
