42-48% is very healt
[2022-06-26 03:11:52 PM] : 42-48% is very healthy, though all of those numbers are relative too. Nothing I'd be worried about until/unless you notice a MASSIVE change.
i’ve also decided to
[2022-06-24 08:57:26 AM] : i’ve also decided to resume work on those videos that i started and then abandoned. making videos is hard, but then again everything is hard, and i already know people will buy the videos. so i’ve decided to “be a professional” and do the work i know needs doing even though it’s not super pleasant. but i have a more cheerful attitude toward the videos now that i went on my little rumspringa
yeah, there are some
[2022-06-24 08:51:54 AM] : yeah, there are some great pains in /r/learnprogramming. i like your suggestion and i believe i’ll take it. i think the problem i’ve had there is that i’ve had the attitude of “if this pain isn’t going to be my next big focus area, then it’s not even worth studying/ebombing/etc.” but that’s probably not a smart attitude to have. i think i’ll probably make more progress if i stop being in such a rush and take the time to slow down, take notes, reply to people’s question...
searching the slack
[2022-06-24 12:49:21 AM] : searching the slack history for “12-week plan” or “workbook” and there’s basically nothing. Nobody does the “pick one broad focus per undated week” in the workbook eh?
i’ll share my broade
[2022-06-23 04:59:15 PM] : i’ll share my broader hangup then. i’m trying to figure out new ways to serve my audience. each time i go through the safari process, i can’t figure out how to pick pains to focus on. picking something just feels so arbitrary. but i pick something anyway. then i go through a cycle of:
safari -> focus on a pain -> start to create an ebomb for it -> realize that creating the ebomb feels unnatural and forced unlike my past ebomb work -> start over with safari and the cycle repeats
i don’t know why it’s so hard for me this time around. i’ve done it before so it feels like i should be able to do it again, but something’s not working...

[2022-06-22 03:45:32 AM] : I've added reviews to my podcast site. These get pulled in to my main site. Its quite humbling tbh, plus I also think adds a lot of value to potential listeners. The main issue is that leaving an Apple podcast review seems super hard for 90% of people to navigate. Wish it was easier but go for it.

[2022-06-15 03:54:27 AM] : I added logos for companies where our mentors worked, without permission. Haven't got in trouble yet, but I've assumed if anyone complained I could just remove them.
Thanks guys for thes
[2022-06-13 03:45:19 PM] : Thanks guys for these. Finding the manual approach is working atm so just keeping an eye on the rates as ref is handy.
Re paritybar. On my research I stumbled across paritydeals.com which looks similar but is trying to build on the concept and is paid. Maybe that's where it ended up?...

[2022-06-10 08:26:50 AM] : Thoughts on nicely dealing with an "expert" in the field, but who isn't. The issue is the guy is blinkered to his own views - which are sadly ill informed and potentially completely wrong. I had him on the podcast and actually got my first hate mail from people as a result! - not to me but about him and how having him on had brought the show down! That is all ok but the guy keeps writing and suggesting things and I don't know what to do... I keep ignoring him at the mo...

[2022-06-09 06:50:02 PM] : a realization that i’ve repeatedly had over the last couple years, although i haven’t consciously articulated it to myself before, is that the main thing i teach (ruby on rails testing) is a huge topic which involves a large number of hard-to-teach things, and many of the concepts have prerequisite concepts which on their own don’t have much intrinsic value but are only worth learning if you’re going to learn certain other things later. so it’s huge and hard to break u...

[2022-06-09 04:38:31 PM] : one thought i had is that i could just take my existing book and raise the price on it. i could change it from $49/$99 to $99/$199. the problem with that is that it doesn’t seem very justifiable. it’s a short book. but i do think it would be reasonable to expand the book and then raise the price.
i’d like to think ou
[2022-06-09 04:23:40 PM] : i’d like to think out loud for a moment if i may. for the last few years, i’ve set a goal of making double the revenue i did the previous year. on average i have in fact hit my goals ($2100 in 2019, $3750 in 2020, $14K in 2021). so far 2022 has been about $900/mo on average. that’s about $11K for the year if that average continues. so not bad but not close to my $28K goal ($14K * 2).
it has been obvious to me since the beginning of 2022 that if i want to increase my revenue and hit my goal, i have to do something different, or else sales will only be about the same as last year. the only 3 ways to increase revenue are to increase the number of customers, increase the frequency with which they buy, or increase the average sale size. i decided in the beginning of 2022 that i would focus on the last way, increasing the average sale size.
my current problem, which has actually been a problem for years now, is that for the life of me i can’t seem to figure out how to create a product offering larger than $49. my book costs $49, with a $99 “team” tier. i’m not a big fan of the whole “online course” thing, either as a producer or a consumer, but i slowly came to the conclusion that the next logical rung on the product ladder was a course, since books usually go for $X0 but courses often go for $X00 or more....

[2022-06-07 02:37:15 PM] : ouch, I just wrote a reply to someone in reddit. So much pain. It's interesting to feel different from helping people since I got started with safari. In the beginning, I used to feel the pain with the person. Of course, that wasn't effective. Now that I learned the difference between empathy and compassion, I can emphatize with their pain without feeling overwhelmed. That way, I can help them and not get derailed by the emotions. Interesting thought to share :stacking...
here’s an update on
[2022-06-07 08:19:09 AM] : here’s an update on my work if anybody’s interested. i had been working on a video course to go with my existing book. the work had been progressing very slowly and fairly unhappily. yesterday i finally decided to just kill the video project. the reasons are that i realized that i kind of hate making videos, i’m never very happy with the result, it takes forever (compared to writing), and my work schedule isn’t conducive to video production work (because the context switching cost is much higher than for writing). plus i myself am not a consumer of programming videos. i actually can’t stand programming videos. which makes it kind of funny to be someone who’s trying to make and sell them. yet another downside to the video thing is that since i’ve been spending all my time making videos, i haven’t been writing, which historically is the main thing that has worked out well for me and earned me new email subscribers.
so anyway, i’m not sure yet exactly what’s next for me, other than i’ll be going back to my normal writing habits that i had practiced before i started this video stuff. the point of the video work was to try to increase my product revenue. so my question for myself now is how i want to try to achieve that goal now that i’ve decided that making videos isn’t going to be the path to get there....

[2022-06-06 11:43:19 PM] : Echoing this recommendation for the Workshop Survival Guide. I purchased it just to get some idea for a workshop I'm considering giving later this year. I devoured this book in just a few days, it's so good!

[2022-05-24 02:37:19 PM] : i could maybe use a little advice. i decided to start looking for a new job. i don’t want to quit my current job before finding new one, so unfortunately i can’t announce to my podcast, email list, etc. that i’m looking for a new job. so i’m wondering in what ways i can make use of these assets i’ve built up over the years - podcast, blog, email list, conference talk history, etc.
any ideas on how i can get the most value out of these things without “outing myself” to my boss prematurely? what i’ve been able to come up with so far is that i can at least list these things on my resume and reach out to the people i’ve met in the course of doing my podcast, speaking at conferences, etc. i can’t imagine that there’s much more i can do but maybe other people have some ideas that i’m not thinking of. any ideas would be greatly appreciated....
Has anyone been appr
[2022-05-20 05:37:25 AM] : Has anyone been approached to have their articles translated and published in other languages? Someone wants to translate some of my stuff in Korean and post it on their blog. I’m wary however of having my content on other sites which I don’t control. I could suggest publishing the translation on my site but then I have to add i18n support since it’ll be the first time and not sure how much time that would cost. Curious to hear if anyone has a similar story or how to a...
